DESCRIBING THE IMAGE
It is important to use standard terms when describing an image.
HYPERECHOIC
Bright white. This means the US has met a tissue interface where there is a high level of reflection.
HYPOECHOIC
Grey: medium level of reflection
ANECHOIC
Black. No US information is coming back to the transducer from this area. This may be due to a lack of reflection or because US cannot penetrate into this area.
Shadowing is the term used when there is an anechoic area due to the lack of penetration.
HOMOGENOUS
Smooth, the tissue seems to be a uniform shade of grey.
VARIEGATED/HETEROGENOUS
Not smooth: lots of shades of grey and white and black. Or not uniform.
